Antique fertility bracelet, Thrace/Bulgaria, 17th/18th century.

Antique open cuff bracelet in bronze/copper alloy with strong relief decoration, fluted fields, rosettes and a central geometric cross/sun rosette motif.

The bracelet belongs to a type associated with Thrace/Balkans and older bridal and fertility traditions. Similar bracelets are described as gifts from mother to daughter at the wedding and could be worn until the birth of the first child.

The construction is hollow, and there is a small original hole on the inside at each end. This may be related to the production of the hollow parts, probably by casting around a core.

The material is estimated to be bronze or another copper alloy. The surface has a dark brown patina and smaller areas with green verdigris.

Origin is most likely Thrace/Balkans, possibly Bulgaria or Macedonia. The type is known over a longer period, and the bracelet is cautiously estimated to be from approx. 17th-19th century.
